Chapter Ten

Anissa opened her bleary eyes and forced herself to sit up in bed, the motion provoking a head rush.

Water. She needed water. And something for her headache.

She spotted the pack of anti-nausea tablets on the nightstand, and the memory of the day before came rushing back.

She’d tried to kiss Sawyer.

Oh, Four Hells, I’m a fucking idiot.

A wave of humiliation washed over her, compounded by the headache and an equally potent rush of nausea. She forced herself to take deep breaths, then, tablet packet in hand, fetched a glass of water from the replicator. She swallowed two and hoped they would kick in soon.

She checked the time and was surprised to see it was only half past four. What time had she gone to bed—oh, Four Hells, what time had she passed out? Early evening, she guessed. She’d remembered spending the afternoon at the university pub that used to be the military academy barracks.

She still couldn’t believe that. It was so disrespectful to the Laresh Forces. It should’ve been a museum or something she thought as she stumbled into the shower. Her indignant ruminations were cut short as she remembered the shower’s laser cleansers, and she stepped out. A post-hangover shower should involve water.

It was four-thirty in the morning. Sawyer was bound to be sleeping. She wrapped a towel around herself and collected the soap and shampoo she’d bought on Bliss Station, along with a change of clothes, and opened her cabin door. Even though she knew Sawyer would be deep in sleep—at least, she hoped he was—she still stole a glance either side of the corridor before venturing out to the converted brig.

Once there, she locked the door and drew a bath in the oversized tub. The anti-nausea medication Sawyer left for her had already started kicking in by the time she sank into the hot water, which meant her only distraction from analyzing her mortifying behavior of the day before was gone.

She’d tried to kiss Sawyer. She held her breath and dunked her head underwater. But when she came back up, the embarrassment hadn’t washed away.

She’d have to apologize, there was no way around that. If she didn’t, the incident would hang over their heads, possibly forever, and she wanted to be able to look him in the eye again someday. That day probably wouldn’t be today or tomorrow, but someday.

Anissa had never been much of a drinker, even during her days in the academy, when acting like a jackass was usually part of the package. It was one of the reasons she’d risen to the rank of commander when she was still in her twenties during the civil war. She always prided herself on her discipline, but then she was faced with a crisis yesterday and had to go and make an idiot of herself.

The worst part of it was that she increasingly viewed Sawyer with less than strictly platonic feelings. She rubbed shampoo into her hair and scrubbed at it. I need a haircut.

She was all about making stupid decisions at present, so she may as well cut it after her bath.
